Top 5 Foundations for 2018

It’s kinda like jean shopping—it’s just a pain in the butt finding THE perfect foundation. But once found, it’s life changing. As a professional hair & makeup artist, I try to sample products regularly so I’m up to date with trends and I enjoy trying new things. Within 2018, my personal makeup aesthetic shifted to extremely natural looks. I’ve grown very comfortable leaving the house without a stitch of makeup on and when wearing makeup, I love the look and feeling of very little. So with that in mind, here are the new and tried & true foundations I feel in love with during 2018.

In order from least used to my most favorite:

#5 DIOR AIRFLASH FOUNDATION

WHY I LOVE IT:

Got dark under eye circles? No problem my friend, this stuff has you covered! This product is lightweight and packs a punch with coverage (medium to full) which makes it one of my FAVORITE under eye concealers. This has been one of my OG favorite foundations of all time and I even use it on clients from time to time. Because of it’s spray application, it also mimics airbrush makeup—making it perfect for special occasions! My favorite way to apply this: spray onto a flat kabuki brush and apply directly to the face.

PROS:

  • Mimics “airbrush” makeup application

  • Satin finish

  • Achieves medium to full coverage

  • Excellent under eye concealer

  • Feels extremely lightweight

CONS:

  • Pricey! $60/bottle

  • Limited color range (especially for deep skin tones)

  • Learning curve to master the spray application

#4: MAC FACE & BODY FOUNDATION

WHY I LOVE IT:

This dew is real with this one! It’s very rare to find a foundation with luminous finish that doesn’t slip off half way through the day. NOT with this little beauty! This product is a pro-artist cult favorite for a reason: it stays put. It requires little to no powder for most skin types and leaves the most beautiful dewy finish all day long. This product is very versatile and even mixes well with other foundations to provide additional hydrating benefits. My favorite way to apply it is either with my fingers or beauty blender.

PROS:

  • Fool proof application—anything works and it blends easily

  • Staying power is amazing (it will NOT come off until you need it to)

  • Photographs beautifully

  • Looks just like skin—it’s impossible to get a cakey look with this

CONS:

  • Sheer coverage

  • Not the best for super oily skin types

#3: It Cosmetics CC+ Illumination

WHY I LOVE IT:

This is GREAT for dry skin because of it’s luminous finish (you know I love me some dew) and hydrating properties. It also contains SPF 50 which makes it an excellent anti-aging foundation because there’s nothing more aging than sun damage ;). I often mix the colors “fair” and “light” on the back of my hand to get my perfect match and then apply with a damp beauty blender. I recommend setting it with powder to provide long-term wear.

PROS:

  • Luminous Finish: this will make you look like a glowing goddess!

  • Excellent coverage: can even hide dark under eye circles for most

  • Skip the SPF because this one has you covered! SPF 50

  • Contains silicone creating a smooth application that can also fill in fine lines & scarring

CONS:

  • Limited color range (12 shades), especially for deep skin tones

  • Contains fragrance—something to be aware of for sensitive skin types

#2: ILIA TRUE SERUM FOUNDATION

WHY I LOVE IT:

Your skin but BETTER! Like a lot better. While wearing this foundation, I’ve never gotten more compliments on how healthy my skin looks. The formula of this product delivers nourishing ingredients to the skin and is fragrance-free (glory, glory hallelujah!). This blends on the skin smoothly and will minimize imperfections since it contains silicone (seeing a common thread here ;)). My favorite way to apply this is with my fingers—the warmth of the hands helps to spread the product nicely on the face without leaving streaks.

PROS:

  • Fragrance free (a rarity in quality cosmetics)

  • Nourishing ingredients to improve skin health

  • Finish is extremely skin-like, giving the illusion of skin being makeup-free

  • Gives the skin a beautiful glow, making it look very healthy

CONS:

  • Sheer to light coverage (concealer would be needed to provide more coverage)

#1: FACE ATELIER ULTRA PRO FOUNDATION

WHY I LOVE IT:

This is a pro artist must have and wonderful for everyday wear. This shade range is extremely forgiving, each shade could easily match multiple skin tones. The foundation line also includes adjusters that allow for anyone to customize foundation shades (especially helpful for pros). With the proper prep, this foundation could be used on every skin tone and because it is fragrance free AND non-comedogenic, it works on every skin type too! It truly is an all round good foundation for EVERYONE. My favorite way to apply this is with a beauty blender.

PROS:

  • Silicone based foundation—NO primer needed (always do proper skin prep based on your skin type)

  • Completely customizable complexion range

  • Photographs BEAUTIFULLY!

  • Buildable coverage (can achieve full if needed)

  • Versatile—can be used for a variety of needs such as photography, video, special occasion, etc.

CONS:

  • Isn’t hyped up enough in the consumer market
